WHO IS EDİBE ŞAHİN?

Edibe Şahin, who served as the mayor of Tunceli between 2009 and 2014, has been released from Kandıra Prison, where she was detained.

Şahin completed her 8-year, 9-month prison sentence, which was given for the charge of "being a member of an organization".

Şahin, who was detained at Kandıra Women's Closed Prison No.1, was released today.

WHO IS EDİBE ŞAHİN?

In the local elections of 2009, she ran as a DTP candidate for mayor of Tunceli and she was elected. She served as the mayor of the city from 2009 to 2014. In the 2015 general elections, she was nominated as a parliamentary candidate from the same party and was elected with over 61% of the vote. Elections held in June 2015 were renewed in November 2015.

The Turkish general election held on November 1, 2015, was an early general election called by President Erdogan due to an inability to form a government with a vote of confidence. According to Article 77 of the constitution, the election was scheduled to be held in June 2019. At this election, Alican Önlü became the first candidate from the HDP party and Gürsel Erol won as CHP’s first candidate.

Edibe Şahin, who served as a member of parliament for a short time, is a married mother of two. She is the first woman to be elected as a member of parliament from Tunceli throughout the history of the Turkish Republic. (İLKHA)
